Sailability Northland sailing for the disabled

Sailability Northland a volunteer-based organisation which, through the activity of sailing, enriches the lives of people with any type of disability. We are a sailing organisation for people with disabilities.

We offer the chance for both young and older people an opportunity to get into sailing, most of our successful NZ sailors start when they are young, at northland sailability we really want more younger people to participate

Sailing is considered to be great for anyone including the disabled. Our aim is to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to sail in safety and to experience adventure and freedom – building mobility, self-confidence and pride through achievement.

Sailing activities cover a broad spectrum, ranging from recreation, therapeutic and competitive activities, from grass-roots, entry-level through to elite World Championships and Paralympic training.

We are currently based at Bay of Islands Yacht Club Waitangi 0293

What to bring when sailing

Sailability Northland advises you must bring; a hat, a drink bottle, sunscreen, suitable warm clothing and a change of clothes. If you have your own life jacket or buoyancy aid, bring it with you so we can check it out. Don’t buy one, we can lend you one. A good wind-proof, spray-proof jacket is important. We need more disabled young people to join us

You are expected to be responsible for your personal safety so please advise us of any agility or communication impairments so we can be prepared. We do like to work with your helper or support person so bring them with you plus any friends or family as well.

Our sessions run for about 2 hours overall and 30 minutes for a participant. They are weather dependent
